American Psycho The Musical || Mia Dabkowski-Chandler

The Fame Reporter interviewed Mia Dabkowski-Chandler starring as Evelyn Williams in the much-anticipated musical revival of American Psycho The Musical soon to tour Melbourne and Brisbane, following a sell-out season in Melbourne last year.

Playing at Melbourne’s Chapel Off Chapel from 29 October 2026 and Brisbane’s Powerhouse Theatre from 5 February 2027, AMERICAN PSYCHO – THE MUSICAL pulls no punches in its critique of capitalism, consumerism and excess.

The show dives into the mind of Patrick Bateman: a young, wealthy investment banker with a taste for designer suits by day, and something far more sinister by night. Set in the money-obsessed Manhattan of the late 1980s, AMERICAN PSYCHO – THE MUSICAL is a blood-soaked thrill ride through greed, privilege and moral decay, soundtracked by a slick score and iconic hits from Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, New Order and Huey Lewis and the News.

We caught up with Mia to chat about stepping into the role of Evelyn Williams in American Psycho: The Musical, the experiences that have shaped her career, how she’s finding the humanity beneath one of the show’s most intriguing characters, what audiences can expect from this thrilling new production, and much more.

Welcome to The Fame Reporter Mia and congratulations on joining the cast of American Psycho: The Musical. What first drew you to the role of Evelyn Williams, and what excites you most about bringing her to life on stage?Thankyou! I am very bloody excited to join this company and take on the role of Evelyn Williams. I first saw American Psycho on Broadway in 2016 and have been completely drawn to the show’s style and music since then.

What excites me the most about playing Evelyn Williams in this production is being able to bring her to life for a new audience. Finding her language and movement myself and leaning into her directness and the heightened style that is American Psycho.

Evelyn is a fascinating character navigating wealth, status and complicated relationships. How will you approach finding the humanity beneath her polished exterior?
Evelyn is described as glamorous, oblivious and deeply invested in appearances. However, we all know that what makes every person on this planet unique, is their personal experiences that build their opinion, their morals and values.

Finding her humanity will be deeply connected to what has made her so invested in her appearance, paralleled with her ability to compartmentalise her values from societal expectations.

The musical is known for its dark humour, psychological twists and iconic 1980s setting. What can audiences expect from this production without giving too much away?
Blood, wit, archetypes and 1980s bangers. The production holds a mirror up to the audience about the level of acceptance and forgiveness we lend to our peers.

Themes such as societal pressure and inhumane desire highlight the level of comfortability people will accept in an attempt to not question the status quo.

You’ve performed in productions including Cats and TINA – The Tina Turner Musical, both of which demand incredible stamina and versatility. How have those experiences prepared you for a show as unique as American Psycho?
My track during Cats left the stage once during Act 1 and that’s it. Act 2 was a mountain and it taught me how to stay present and focused for a long period of time. Tina involved playing multiple small character types throughout the show to aid Tina’s story, teaching me versatility and that no role is a small role!

The score blends pop-inspired sounds with a darker theatrical edge. Is there a particular song or moment in the show that you are looking forward to performing?
“You Are What You Wear” – I am so looking forward to sharing the stage with Meg Williams who will play Courtney, and transforming this song into our own female pop duet anthem.

The rhythm and tonality of the song lives in this pop world that is sharp, edgy and slightly unhinged – a style uncommon on musical theatre stages.

The production will play both Melbourne and Brisbane. How does it feel knowing you’ll be sharing this thrilling show with audiences in two cities?
PEACHY! For the producers to be able to travel this production across two different cities is such an incredible feat.

Sharing this show with more audiences around Australia is exciting, not only for the performers and crew but also Queensland audiences – and I hope we see more cities to come!

You’ve worked across very different styles of musical theatre throughout your career. What keeps you drawn to taking on such varied roles, and what have they taught you as a performer?
To be completely honest, I haven’t been given much of a choice! Not to downplay my successes, but I’ve always been a ‘yes and’ person so I have mostly taken all offers that have come my way.

Given the Australian theatre industry is quite small, you have to be versatile and ready for any opportunity helping you to increase the longevity of your career.

I’ll throw my hat in the ring for shows that call to me, shows that challenge me but always productions that I will evidently learn, grow and have the best time in.

I am so lucky to call this job my career, but even more fortunate for the versatility I have grown into. This is what keeps the wheels rolling and shaping the artist that I am.

Playing varied roles throughout my career has taught me that there is so much more depth in our abilities than we sometimes know of ourselves. Life experience has also led me to reconsider my cast stereotypes and champion my personal observations.
