A Resounding Ovation for the Reimagined RENT: Opening Night at QPAC’s Playhouse Theatre



In a fresh and uplifting new production of the beloved classic, RENT transported the audience back to the pulsating and passionate East Village, New York of the early 90s, the reimagined production took centre stage on Opening Night at QPAC’s Playhouse Theatre. Honoring the work of the late Jonathan Larson, the iconic characters came to life in a performance that was not only a tribute to the original but a new and emotionally charged experience.


The Australian cast was filled with unforgettable performances from the nation’s finest pool of theatre greats. Nick Afoa’s portrayal of Tom Collins was nothing short of extraordinary. The charming college professor, Collins, dreams of a utopian future in ‘Santa Fe’, the song he beautifully sings. Afoa’s incredible voice and emotional depth brought the character of Collins to life, particularly with the incredible relationship he shared with Carl De Villa as Angel whilst delivering a raw and powerful performance that left the audience in awe.


Martha Berhane, as the fiery, passionate, and vulnerable Mimi, showcased her breadth of talent throughout her character’s turbulent arc. In the unforgettable ‘Light My Candle’ as her chemistry with Jerrod Smith, who played Roger, a songwriter-musician bloomed. Both living with HIV, their bond had an invisible string that was palpable, and they always came back to each other throughout the production, adding a layer of authenticity to their on-stage romance.


Noah Mullins delivered a stellar performance as Mark, the independent Jewish-American filmmaker and Roger’s roommate. Mullins captured Mark’s struggles and aspirations with authenticity, providing a relatable leading anchor for the audience, that cemented his obvious love and devotion to his wonderful band of friends he calls family.


Calista Nelmes and Thndo, playing Maureen and Joanne respectively, stole the spotlight with their show-stopping rendition of “Take Me or Leave Me.” The chemistry between the two characters was electric, and their powerful voices resonated through the theater, making it one of the standout moments of the evening.

Carl De Villa’s portrayal of Angel, the drag queen and percussionist with AIDS, brought both heart and humor to the stage in the lively number ‘Today 4 U’ and the emotionally touching song ‘I’ll cover you.’ De Villa’s performance was a testament to the character’s resilience and exuberance, earning well-deserved praise from the audience, especially with their hardships living with the life-threatening disease. The positive nature of Carl was incredible to witness particularly with their struggles and the bond with Nick’s character, Collins was the beating heart of the show.


The wonderful performer Tana Laga’aia, as Benny, the local landlord, added depth to the narrative with a compelling performance that highlighted the intricacies of the character’s relationship with the bohemian community in the brilliant uplifting song ‘La Vie Bohème’ and the imminent joy he endures as he keeps his friendships with the group.

The ensemble, featuring Anna Francesca Armenia, Kelsi Boyden, Mariah Gonzalez, Sam Harmon, Lawrence Hawkins, Josslynn Hlenti, Hannah McInerney, Sam Richardson, Chad Rosete, and Theodore Williams, showcased impeccable skill and heart-wrenching emotion in the musical numbers, creating a seamless and immersive experience.

The staging of RENT was a visual feast, with set pieces that moved gracefully across the stage, perfectly complementing the performances. The rendition of the iconic song ‘Seasons of Love’ broke the audience emotionally with not a dry eye in the house and added layers of emotion and nostalgia to the production.

As the final notes of the musical reverberated through the theater, an instantaneous standing ovation erupted from the audience. The emotional impact of the reimagined RENT was profound, with tears, cheers, and a shared sense of connection among theatergoers. The reimagined RENT at QPAC’s Playhouse Theatre was a resounding success. With a stellar cast, powerful performances, and stunning stage work, the production paid homage to the original while infusing it with new energy and emotion. It’s a must-see for both die-hard fans of the musical and those experiencing the magic of RENT for the first time.
