Thanks to the power of TikTok, viral songs and fan-created videos have introduced the cult favourite to a whole new generation, and opening night at HOTA, Home of the Arts proved that its popularity is bigger than ever.
Playing on the Gold Coast until 9 August before continuing its Australian and New Zealand tour, this fresh Australian production delivers a thrilling night of theatre that had audiences cheering as though they were at a sold-out rock concert.
From the moment the overture began, the atmosphere inside the theatre was electric. Fans arrived dressed in hints of 80s nostalgia, paying homage to the iconic film and beloved characters, while younger audience members—many experiencing the show live for the very first time after discovering it online—sang along to every lyric they knew.

Based on the iconic 1988 film starring Winona Ryder, Heathers The Musical follows Veronica Sawyer as she navigates the ruthless social hierarchy of Westerberg High after befriending the school’s three most powerful girls. When mysterious outsider Jason “J.D.” Dean enters her life, teenage rebellion quickly spirals into something much darker. Beneath its razor-sharp comedy, outrageous satire and unforgettable score lies a surprisingly heartfelt story about identity, inclusion, bullying, mental health and ultimately deciding what kind of legacy you want to leave behind.
Directed by Andy Fickman, who also directed the original Off-Broadway production and continues to oversee productions across Broadway, the West End, North America and the UK, this Australian cast doesn’t simply recreate previous versions—they reinvent it with confidence. Emma Caporaso is exceptional as Veronica Sawyer, delivering a star-making performance filled with warmth, vulnerability and remarkable vocal power. She effortlessly carries the emotional weight of the production while making Veronica relatable, funny and fiercely determined.
Conor Beaumont commands the stage as Jason “J.D.” Dean, balancing charisma and menace with ease. His chemistry with Caporaso is magnetic, while his powerhouse vocals make every solo a standout moment.
Calista Nelmes is sensational as Heather Chandler, delivering the perfect combination of confidence, glamour and razor-sharp attitude. Every entrance immediately commands attention, proving exactly why Heather remains one of musical theatre’s most iconic mean girls.
Amélia Rojas gives Heather Duke an exciting journey, capturing both insecurity and ambition with impressive nuance while showcasing exceptional vocals throughout.
Abigail Sharp brings genuine heart to Heather McNamara, beautifully portraying the character’s emotional depth beneath her bubbly exterior. Her vulnerability provides some of the production’s most touching moments.
Zoe Gertz is a comedic highlight as Ms. Fleming and Veronica’s Mum. Her hilarious audience interaction during “Shine a Light” had the audience in stitches and demonstrated just how much fun this cast is having on stage. Mel O’Brien delivers a beautifully sincere performance as Martha Dunnstock, providing the show’s emotional centre with grace, honesty and warmth.
Nic Van Lits and David Cuny are outstanding as Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney, embracing every ridiculous moment with fearless commitment and impeccable comic timing. Mackenzie Htay (Beleaguered Geek), Jack Reason (Hipster Dork), Samuel Henderson (Preppy Stud), Thalia Osegueda Santos (Young Republicanette), Jocelyn Scott (Stoner Chick), Hannah Chesser (New Wave Party Girl), Scarlett Anthony (Drama Club Drama Queen) and Aimee Jones (Midwestern Surfer Punk) complete a phenomenal ensemble. Every cast member is fully committed, creating a believable, energetic world where every student has a unique personality and purpose.
The choreography bursts with attitude and energy, perfectly complementing Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy’s infectious score. Combined with inventive direction, the production rarely slows, constantly finding clever new ways to surprise audiences.
Visually, Heathers is spectacular. The striking lighting design heightens every emotional beat, seamlessly shifting from outrageous comedy to darker, more dramatic moments. The colourful costumes perfectly embrace the 1980s while maintaining a contemporary edge, and the inventive set design transforms effortlessly to keep the story moving at a cinematic pace.
Although packed with outrageous humour, unforgettable one-liners and laugh-out-loud moments, Heathers ultimately succeeds because of its heart. It asks important questions about popularity, belonging, identity and kindness while reminding audiences that everyone has the power to decide who they want to be and how they wish to be remembered.
