“Head Over Heels” Musical presented by That Production Company and Mira Ball Productions at the Ipswich Civic Centre

The Queensland premiere of “Head Over Heels,” presented by That Production Company and Mira Ball Productions at the Ipswich Civic Centre, delivers an evening of infectious joy and laughter. The musical, a delightful fusion of Elizabethan romance and 80s pop-punk, showcases the incredible talent of local actors who bring boundless energy and impeccable comedic timing to the stage.

At the helm of the kingdom of Arcadia is Henry Kafoa as King Basilius. Kafoa’s portrayal is both commanding and endearing, capturing the complexity of a ruler whose journey is fraught with comic missteps and poignant revelations. Aurelie Roque, as Queen Gynecia, complements Kafoa perfectly, her regal presence and nuanced performance adding depth to the royal couple’s tumultuous relationship, with vocals to die for.

Josh Whitten as Dametas, the loyal viceroy, shines with his impeccable comedic timing. Whitten’s portrayal adds a layer of earnest hilarity to the show, serving as a perfect counterpoint to the royal family’s antics. Freya Armani delivers a standout performance as the non-binary oracle Pythio, bringing a captivating blend of mystique and humor to the role. Armani’s stage presence is magnetic, drawing the audience into every prophecy with a mix of intrigue and wit.

The royal daughters, Pamela and Philoclea, played by Erika Naddei and Ella Jaz Macrokanis respectively, are a dynamic duo with stellar vocal performances. Naddei’s Pamela is fiercely independent and hilariously self-absorbed, her comedic prowess evident in every scene. Macrokanis’ Philoclea, on the other hand, exudes a tender innocence, her romantic entanglements providing some of the show’s most heartfelt moments.

Nykita O’Keeffe as Mopsa, the loyal handmaiden with a secret of her own, delivers a performance full of charm and subtle strength. Her scenes with Pamela are particularly touching, showcasing O’Keeffe’s ability to balance humor with emotional depth. William Kasper’s Musidorus is a revelation, his transformation from humble shepherd to dashing hero filled with comedic brilliance and genuine warmth.

The ensemble of “Head Over Heels” performed with their effervescent personalities and incredible comedic timing. Each ensemble member brings a unique flair to the production, creating a vibrant and cohesive backdrop that enhances the main action without overshadowing it. Their energy is palpable, infusing every dance number and group scene with a contagious enthusiasm that sweeps the audience along for the ride.

That Production Company and Mira Ball Productions has crafted a visually stunning, with incredible projections that musically exhilarates the show. The set design is both whimsical and functional, seamlessly transitioning between the pastoral beauty of Arcadia and the grandeur of the royal court. Costuming is a visual feast, blending period attire with contemporary flair to reflect the show’s playful anachronisms.

The musical direction ensures that the Go-Go’s iconic hits are performed with verve and precision, each song a highlight in its own right. From the spirited “We Got the Beat” to the soulful “Heaven is a Place on Earth,” the music is an integral part of the storytelling, expertly woven into the narrative.

It is a joyous celebration of love, acceptance, and the transformative power of music and comedy.
